Accra Airport evaluates commercial bids for flagship new T3

GHANA. Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is evaluating bids from concessionaires to operate retail, including duty free, at Kotoka International Airport’s new flagship Terminal 3, in the country’s capital Accra.

A GACL spokesperson confirmed bids have been received for concessions including duty free, branded speciality retail/duty paid, other retail, food & beverage spaces, baggage handling, business and hotel lounges and financial services outlets. GACL will grant five-year contracts to those offering the best proposals.

The new terminal, designed to improve capacity and position Ghana as a regional hub, is set to complete construction by the end of Q1 2018.

GACL is reviewing bids from concessionaires to provide a variety of “essential, yet practical” services to the public while maximising revenues for the airport operator and its partners.

GACL conducted a thorough evaluation of factors such as growth, traffic flow, passenger habits, passenger demographics, security needs, airline gate utilisation, space configurations, and concession mix to determine the types of concessions and locations offered.

For example, GACL included a branded speciality retail concession as part of the offer to enhance the passenger experience in the terminal.

GACL’s evaluation of bids for the T3 concession programme is based on three core objectives:

  • The operator must ensure product availability to meet consumer demand and achieve sales growth. Performance standards for operators need to be set to ensure operations are managed efficiently and effectively and customer satisfaction is achieved.
  • Passengers are becoming more discerning about price, product quality, variety and customer service. Therefore, innovation and creativity in the retail offer will ensure that T3’s retail concessions continue to be successful and adapt to changing trends and demographics.
  • The airport stipulated customer service and satisfaction as of utmost importance. “GACL will only be able to fulfill its goals if the concessionaire and its staff are committed to providing the highest level of customer service. To the millions of passengers who travel through the airport, concession employees represent the face of the airport and contribute greatly to a passenger’s overall experience and first impression,” the airport said.

Airport expansion

The new terminal aims to ease the pressure on the existing two terminals and is expected to handle up to five million passengers a year, with an expansion potential up to 6.5 million passengers. Construction of the new terminal will be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2018.

The airport expansion is part of the country’s ambition to upgrade its vital infrastructure by modernising and transforming the airport into a hub for West Africa and as a regional aviation hub.

Designed for international traffic, the new terminal will comprise five levels spread across 45,000sq m.
