30,000 turn out for Ascot’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

UK. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has cemented its status as Ascot’s best-attended event outside of its Royal meeting. A crowd of over 30,000 turned out at the Berkshire horse racing course to watch the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition.

Staged on Saturday 11 August, the event saw four teams – The Girls, Europe, The Rest of the World and Great Britain and Ireland – compete in a points-based competition which was played out over six ten runner handicaps in front of the sell-out crowd.

As reported, The Girls took the title with 76 points ahead of Europe (70), Rest of the World (48) and Great Britain and Ireland (46).

The winning team established an early lead in the competition when Hollie Doyle rode Tis Marvellous, trained by Clive Cox, to victory in the opening Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash.

The award for the most successful individual of the event was claimed by Hayley Turner, British racing’s number one female rider. Brazil’s Joao Moreira was presented with the Dubai Duty Free Ride of the Day after his double in the final two races.

Hayley Turner, from ‘The Girls’ team, took home the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle award.

Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin said: “Dubai Duty Free is a strong supporter of Dubai’s vision to promote the Emirate through sport and today’s event, which forms part of an extensive and varied portfolio of high profile sporting events across the globe, is a classic example of that strategy.”

Dubai Duty Free guests, who included horseracing celebrities, travel retail and sports media were given access to a private viewing area for a post-racing concert headlined by international singing star Rita Ora supported by Example & DJ Wire, Soul II Soul and DJ Scott Mills.

In a separate event on the previous day, 10 August, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Golf Challenge took place at Foxhills Golf Course in Ottershaw, Surrey, and was won by a Rest of the World team.
