WHSmith makes Spanish airport debut in Alicante

SPAIN. WHSmith recently unveiled the first of two stores set to open in Alicante International Airport, marking the news, books and convenience item specialist’s debut in the Spanish market.

WHSmith secured a five-year contract to operate the two airside stores at the gateway to the Costa Blanca resort region. The retailer promises a broad range of products, including a selection of Spanish and international newspapers, magazines and books as well as confectionery, drinks, grab & go sandwiches and travel essentials.

Alicante is the sixth-busiest Spanish airport with around 10.6 million passengers in 2015.

The footprint of the main airside store has been extended to allow an improved range of sandwiches, soft drinks, souvenirs and reading materials in multiple languages to reflect the airport’s diverse passenger profile.

Both stores provide a premium, design-focused, contemporary look and feel, in keeping with Alicante International Airport’s design aspirations for its airside lounge, WHSmith said.  The footprint of the main airside store has been extended to allow an improved range of sandwiches, soft drinks, souvenirs and reading materials in multiple languages to reflect the airport’s passenger profile.

WHSmith International Director Louis de Bourgoing said: “Securing the contract for the stores in Alicante is a significant step in our European development strategy. It follows the win of the Düsseldorf International Airport contract and further openings in Northern Europe.

“The team has worked hard to deliver a high standard of design for these stores and provide a real step-change to the traditional ‘news and books’ operations. We look forward to working with [airport authority] AENA to deliver a compelling offer to Alicante Airport’s passengers.”
