Umdasch plays on traveller emotions with Munich Airport T2 fit-out

GERMANY. Umdasch Shopfitting says its interior design work at the new Terminal 2 satellite facility at Munich Airport has created a modern and much-improved shopping environment.

The €900 million satellite terminal was officially opened earlier this year, with Munich Airport subsidiary Eurotrade launching a new retail concept and branding for its duty free stores under the ‘My Duty Free’ name.

Umdasch was responsible for the realisation of the shopfitting for the duty free area. The company said highlights included the introduction of metal statues, the creation of a beer garden atmosphere and a modern interior designed to generate an “emotional” shopping experience for travellers while creating shorter waiting times.

The design concept for the shop areas was produced by Gruschwitz, the Munich architects’ office. Umdasch also used many systems from Vitra Retail.

Some of the notable interior features include furnishings of glass and wood to showcase bags or other leather accessories; a central pillar with an artificial moss surface; and ceiling elements representing a delicate flower, which displays luxury bags.

Wooden retro-style shelving hosts the duty free store’s range of spirits. A number of screens were integrated into the wooden cladding on the wall and are used to play image videos. Glass shelving exhibits the sunglasses and watches.

The special offer areas have been designed to convey a “cosy Munich beer garden” atmosphere at the point of sale. A number of metal statues representing Munich celebrities such as Karl Valentin greet customers in the duty free area.

Umdasch Shopfitting developed the interior across a floor area totalling 2,000sq m.

The company also recently implemented a shopfitting design in two ATÜ duty free stores at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport in the USA. These were located in terminals B and D and covered an area of 500sq m.
