INDIA. About 1,000 workers from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) participated in a ‘walkathon’ on 15 August, as part of a campaign against noise pollution.
The march, which was held on India’s Independence Day, was organised by the airport’s operator GVK Mumbai International Airport Limited.
The walkers, who included employees of Mumbai International Airport, CISF, immigration, customs and their friends and families, were seeking support for the adoption of a ‘no-honking’ habit among drivers of vehicles.
It has been estimated that vehicle horns are responsible for 70% of the noise pollution in the local environment.
To reinforce the message, the walkathon included acts such as skits, dance performances, and flash mobs.
The event marked the beginning of a year-long campaign to create `a Dream city of Mumbai – a better place to live’, the airport said.
