INTERNATIONAL. Welcome to the latest issue of The Moodie Davitt e-Zine, in which we investigate the daigou phenomenon and how the related booming popularity of e-commerce in China will affect travel retail.

Daigou (literally ‘on behalf of’) refers to the millions of Chinese people purchasing goods overseas (ranging from household items to luxury goods) at well below prevailing Chinese domestic prices. Along with the explosive growth of cross-border e-commerce shopping by Chinese consumers, the retail rule-book is being torn up.

Local brands play a vital role in contributing to Sense of Place at an airport, but what about iconic international brands? According to The Design Solution Managing Director Robbie Gill, their input can be just as impactful, and help deliver local flavour with a difference, provided the customer experience is powerful enough. The latest edition of our Sense of Place column explores this theme.

In Best in Class, we turn the spotlight on Nestlé brand Kit Kat. Its latest initiative has been a big success in Japan, offering special varieties of the chocolate bar only available in certain regions of the country, using ingredients and flavours linked to the local area. The idea of customisation has been taken a stage further with the Kit Kat Studio concept, in which consumers can design their own customised Kit Kat.

The latest column in our Spirit of Independence series, in association with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, features Scott Halpern and Matthew Greenbaum, directors at leading family-owned US duty free retailer International Shoppes, as they discuss their influences and values.

Finally, we take our regular look at the industry’s best new launches, campaigns, activations and openings. This issue features a Robert De Niro-backed vodka and a spellbinding female fragrance from Burberry.

Please enjoy this edition of The Moodie Davitt e-Zine with our compliments.
