Showcasing the best of New Zealand: Auckland Airport set to unveil 43 retail and food & beverage opportunities

NEW ZEALAND. Auckland Airport is set to unveil three major retail category RFPs embracing 43 sites across its international and domestic terminals. The opportunities come amid an upgrading of the international departure area, where construction is now well underway.

The three categories are New Zealand Destination (12 sites), Travel Essentials (5) and food & beverage (26). Half of the new sites will be integrated within the expanded new international departure lounge, which will open in stages from late 2017.

The New Zealand Destination and Travel Essentials RFPs, both for five-year terms, will be released this month. New Zealand Destination will feature four sub-categories across 12 sites: Honey (2 sites); Health and Wellbeing (3); Wool, leather, merino, possum & natural fibres (1); and Gifts of New Zealand (4). All sites will be situated at the international terminal. The five Travel Essentials sites will include one opportunity at the domestic terminal.

The Food & Beverage RFP, which will also include opportunities at the domestic terminal, will be released by mid-November. Successful tenderers will be announced early in 2017, with the first stores to open by the end of next year.

The new international departure space will be more than double the size of the previous layout. It will incorporate a reconfigured landside farewell area, expanded security screening and processing and a new passenger lounge and retail hub. As a result, the terminal’s first floor airside retail and food & beverage leased area will increase by around +65%.

The upgrade will cater for rapidly increasing international passenger numbers, which continue to rise on the back of strong growth in high-spending markets, including China, North and Southeast Asia and India. Last year, over 9 million international passengers travelled through Auckland Airport’s international terminal, representing some 75% of all international visitors to New Zealand. The airport handled 17.3 million passengers in total.

Auckland Airport General Manager – Retail Richard Barker said the departure lounge transformation provides a unique opportunity for operators to be part of New Zealand’s busiest retail environment.

“The terminal redevelopment will deliver a clear ‘Sense of Place’, incorporating unmistakeably New Zealand features within a world-class fit-out to provide a memorable departures experience for passengers,” he said. “Our aspiration is for Auckland Airport to showcase the best of New Zealand and the world, so we want our retail, bars and restaurants to both fit in and stand out, creating talking points for customers and setting industry benchmarks for excellence both nationally and internationally.

“We will be looking to partner with innovative operators who share our commitment to customer service, can demonstrate how they will deliver both value and exclusivity, and who will work with us to grow the wider Auckland Airport customer offer through online marketing and sales channels.”
