New two-storey terminal at Seletar Airport to free up capacity at Changi

SINGAPORE. Seletar Airport is to open a new two-storey terminal at the end of 2018. It will have the capacity to handle 700,000 passengers per annum.

At a groundbreaking ceremony for the building, Changi Airport Group said all scheduled turboprop flights from Changi Airport will be moved there. This will help free up capacity at Changi Airport to cope with passenger growth.

The new terminal will have a gross floor area of 9,500sq m, of which 500sq m will be dedicated to serving business aviation passengers. The current terminal handled about 26,700 passenger movements in 2015 and will be torn down when the new facility opens.

Changi Airport Group said the layout of the new terminal will be dictated by clean lines and a functional design to keep the travel experience “simple and efficient” for all passengers. Passenger operations will take place on the ground floor.

As well as a café, the departure area will feature four check-in counters, four immigration counters, two security screening stations and a gate holdroom which can seat close to 200 passengers.

Passengers travelling on chartered business jets and private jets will benefit from a private drop-off area and a dedicated check-in area. The terminal will also feature amenities such as a lounge area and dedicated immigration and security screening areas for these passengers.

The terminal design draws inspiration from “its lush and serene surroundings”, Changi Airport Group said. It will feature a “modern tropical look” on the façade and in the interiors. The design blends warm woody tones with a theme of nature, while a landscaped garden will be located in the middle of the terminal.

“Today’s groundbreaking for the new terminal is another milestone in our plans for the airport,” said Seletar Airport General Manager See Seng Wan. “We look forward to providing passengers with a new level of experience, in terms of comfort and convenience, when the terminal opens.”

Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore Director (Aviation Industry) Daniel Ng said: “The expansion of Seletar Airport will accommodate the growth of our air traffic and optimise operational resources. The new passenger terminal building will also complement operations at Changi Airport and allow for more capacity.”

The construction of the new terminal will be undertaken by Takenaka Corporation, which was awarded the project following a competitive tender. The value of the contract is around S$50 million (US$36 million). The company has been involved in various construction and upgrading works at Changi Airport, including the development of Terminal 4.

A redevelopment programme at Seletar Airport commenced in 2008. It has so far seen enhancements such the lengthening of its runway, the construction of a new control tower and fire station, a doubling of the number of parking stands, additional taxiways and upgraded aircraft parking aprons.
