Moodie Picture Gallery: Shinsegae Duty Free opens in style at Incheon Airport

SOUTH KOREA. Shinsegae Duty Free this week formally opened its main retail offer at Incheon International Airport after trading out of mainly temporary premises since it began its concession on 1 September.

The principal store (numbers 23 and 24 on the diagram below) offers a wide variety of fashion, accessories, and jewellery, as featured in this special Moodie Picture Gallery.

In its other shops (also see diagram) Shinsegae offers a range of premium food items, including Korean red ginseng and chocolates. The retailer has also opened the first Gentle Monster sunglasses store in Korean duty free (pictured below).

The opening caps a hugely successful few weeks for Shinsegae Duty Free which, as first revealed by The Moodie Report, won its first downtown duty free licence in Seoul last month (it gained the licence formerly held by WalkerHill Duty Free).

The department store giant also retained its valuable downtown duty free licence in Busan, ahead of a challenge from Fashion Group Hyungji. In a much-anticipated development Shinsegae Duty Free will relocate its Busan store early next year to the spectacular new Shinsegae Centum City (see below).

Again as first revealed by The Moodie Report, Shinsegae won one of several duty free concessions at Incheon, selling mainly fashion & accessories, food & confectionery and electronics across 12 units embracing some 2,800sq m of space.

Some units will not open until next March. But most stores opened on 1 September via a combination of temporary and newly renovated stores.

Shinsegae will open a Hermès boutique on a high-profile, 150sq m site in early 2016. This spot was vacated by Chanel (under the Korean Tourism Organization licence) several months ago. Chanel is no longer present at Incheon, including in the key beauty category.

The renderings below underline Shinsegae Duty Free’s heady ambitions for its relocated store at Shinsegae Centum City, due to open in early 2016.

Shinsegae Centum City features the world’s largest department store and numerous leisure and entertainment options, including a spa and an ice rink. At around 9,900sq m, the duty free offer will have one-and-a-half times the space of Shinsegae’s current Busan store (the former Paradise Duty Free).
