‘Make it Your Singapore’: Changi unveils interactive art installations

SINGAPORE. Changi Airport has introduced a series of interactive installations and experiences across its three terminals.

The airport has partnered with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) for the ‘Make it Your Singapore’ showcases, which aim to encourage visitors to explore the island city-state in and beyond the airport.

One of the key highlights is the LED ‘Dots Portrait Wall’. It uses motion-sensing technology and offers passengers the chance to take a monochromatic portrait of themselves against the backdrop of different parts of Singapore.

The flip-dot wall is located in Terminal 2’s Departure Transit Lounge next to the Skytrain station. When a passenger stands in front of the wall, motion is detected and the option to take a portrait against a superimposed background is offered. The complete picture then appears on the screen in a black and white flip-dot display, which can be sent to friends and family over e-mail. Background options include Gardens by the Bay and Merlion Park as well as Changi Airport’s control tower and Kinetic Rain art installation.

On the other side of the interactive screen is a ‘Motion Silhouette Wall’, which responds to movements in real time. Adopting the same motion-sensing technology, backdrops and patterns change as passengers in front of the wall move and interact with the animation.

Changi has also installed crafted cardboard art pieces depicting icons of Singapore and the airport at selected luggage claim belts at each terminal. Places of interest featured include the Singapore Flyer, the Sultan Mosque, the Supertrees and Flower Dome of Gardens by the Bay.

Other photo spots at the airport showcase Singapore’s culture and attractions, and feature realistic murals with interactive elements such as a boat ride along the perimeter of the River Safari zoo.

Changi has also introduced a modern version of its trishaw display in T1. The original was present at the same spot when the terminal opened in 1981, and offered a popular photo opportunity. The new trishaw is set against the cultural precincts of Chinatown and Joo Chiat, the airport company said.

“These 3-D backdrops provide visitors with the perfect ‘instagrammable’ moment, making them wonderful souvenirs as they wrap up their visit to Singapore,” it stated.

STB Director, Marketing Partnerships & Planning Jacqueline Ng commented: “Changi Airport is an integral part of the Singapore experience and a perfect place for visitors to learn more about the breadth and depth of offerings they can enjoy in Singapore. We hope that these new installations will both inspire and entertain, and help to start and end a visit to Singapore in a more memorable way.”
