James Gager assumes new role at MAC, La Mer and Jo Malone

James Gager, the new Senior Vice President, Group Creative Director for MAC, La Mer and Jo Malone


INTERNATIONAL. James Gager has been named Senior Vice President, Group Creative Director, a newly created position, overseeing all creative activity for MAC Cosmetics, La Mer and Jo Malone brands globally. Gager will continue to report to John Demsey, Group President of The Estée Lauder Companies.

James’s vision and widely admired creative collaborations have impacted the entire cosmetic industry and we want to maximise his rare talent across more of our brands.”

Gager’s former position was Senior Vice President Creative Director, MAC Cosmetics Worldwide where, according to the group, he has been instrumental in growing the MAC brand into the number one make-up artist brand in the world.

Since 1999, he has conceptualised all creative activity for the MAC brand, with highlights including Barbie for MAC, Hello Kitty for MAC and Lady Gaga for Viva Glam. He also conceptualised the MAC Beauty Icon Series celebrating mature beauty featuring Liza Minelli, Catherine Deneuve and Raquel Welch.

Gager has worked with esteemed photographers such as David LaChapelle, Michael Thompson, Ellen von Unwerth, Nick Knight and Solve Sundsbo. Gager also oversaw the creative activity for the Sean John brand.

Before joining MAC, Gager was the Creative Director for Prescriptives for 20 years where he created ground-breaking campaigns for Virtual Skin and the visionary, trend-setting All Skins campaign that identified the importance of reaching out to diverse consumers.

Gager has received numerous awards, including a Fifi for packaging design. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the MAC AIDS Fund.
