Jakarta’s new ‘Terminal 3 Ultimate’ begins phased opening as Aura Cantik and Plaza Bali prepare duty free operations

Jakarta t3 bannerINDONESIA. Jakarta Soekarno Hatta International Airport’s much-anticipated new ‘Terminal 3 Ultimate’ (pictured above and below) opened for business on 9 August, the culmination of a near US$600 million investment.

The full opening is happening in phases, beginning with national carrier Garuda’s domestic flights, followed by the airline’s international operations. Other carriers will then begin operating out of the terminal, which is expected to be fully functional by March 2017.

jakarta t3 openingThe terminal’s new duty free operations will commence when international flights begin. On 14 July, airport operator Angkasa Pura II announced that local firms PT Aura Cantik and PT Dewata Agung Wibawa (Plaza Bali) had been awarded the duty free concessions for Terminal 3 Ultimate. The companies headed stiff local and international competition, including the local partnerships of Dufry, Lotte Duty Free and DFS.

Aura Cantik was awarded licence 1 ahead of three rival bidders (see table below), while Dewata Agung Wibawa won licence 2, heading a field of five.

Aura Cantik bid alone for the contract but hopes to partner with Aer Rianta International (ARI) to manage the business (though a deal has still to be finalised, we understand reliably). ARI declined to comment at this point.

Plaza Bali enjoys a thriving  partnership with Heinemann Asia Pacific following earlier contract gains at Juanda International Airport, Surabaya and Jakarta Soekarno Hatta International Airport T2.

Once fully operational, Terminal 3 Ultimate will have the capacity to handle around 25 million passengers per year.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is Indonesia’s busiest airport. The full opening of Terminal 3 Ultimate will increase the gateway’s annual passenger capacity from 55 million to 70 million. That will rise to 80 million once T1 and T2 renovations are completed. Angkasa Pura II plans to develop a fourth terminal, next to Terminal 3 Ultimate, by 2021.

Earlier in the year a number of non-duty free retail concessions were awarded as follows:
