Image of the Day: Gucci and CDF-Sunrise Duty Free turn on the style in Beijing

Our regular feature celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns from the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

Today’s image comes from Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3 where CDF-Sunrise Duty Free is masterminding an impressively ambitious and expansive makeover of its retail offer. While all categories are being elegantly reimagined, fashion and beauty are in the frontline of the changes. Pictured is the new Gucci boutique that opened on 11 August, a breakthrough project for CDF-Sunrise as it seeks to redefine the fashion proposition at the capital city’s main gateway (soon to be joined by Beijing Daxing International Airport).

Normally I would crop a photo more tightly than this. But I liked the way the Gucci logo reflects in the shiny floor in the foreground. Gucci isn’t a red-hot brand for no reason. Besides its innate quality, the brand retains a powerful ability to keep attracting new customers while not alienating the old. Its in-store design and merchandising is near-peerless (see pictures below), its marketing always edgy and focused, and its distribution strategy zealous.

China is a key market for the brand and travel retail a key channel. Here the two combine triumphantly.
