DFASS triumphs in Philadelphia Airport duty free and speciality retail bid

USA. DFASS has been awarded the duty free and speciality retail concession at Philadelphia International Airport after an open tender.

The contract runs for ten years and includes five duty free and four specialty retail stores totalling approximately 9,400sq ft. International Shoppes was the incumbent.

The stores will be located in Concourses A, D & E and are expected to be operational as of January 2017.

Philadelphia International Airport currently accommodates over 15 million enplanements.

The new concession is a big boost for the privately held Miami retailer after what was sure to have been a hotly contested tender. The selection criteria for the concession award included operational expertise, strength of commercial proposal and brand portfolio. Although no details have been revealed, likely other bidders would have included International Shoppes, Duty Free Americas and Dufry.

philadelphiaDFASS President of Ground Stores Jon Potash commented: “We are very excited about the opportunity to develop the duty free and specialty retail programme at Philadelphia International Airport. Our team has created a unique blend of stores and concepts that will enhance the overall travel and shopping experience for years to come.”

DFASS declined to comment further but The Moodie Davitt understands the duty free business to have been worth around US$15 million in 2014, with a sharp dip to around US$11 million in difficult market conditions in 2015. The business is understood to be back on track this year and with international routes growing strongly (direct flights to Asia remain a major ambition for airport management), duty free prospects are understood to be strong.

Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania is the largest airport in the Delaware Valley region and in the State. It is a major international hub for American Airlines. The airport has service to destinations in the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

The retail and food & beverage programmes at Philadelphia Airport are managed by MarketPlace PHL.

MarketPlace PHL is a partnership between MarketPlace Development, the Boston-based airport retail development firm, and LeJeune & Associates, a Philadelphia-based retail development, management and consulting firm.

As reported Philadelphia International Airport, American Airlines and MarketPlace PHL recently announced ambitious plans for hospitality group OTG to transform the dining and retail experience “from the ground up” at the airport’s Terminal B.
