The duty free store offers more Portuguese brands and design features emblematic of Porto and the local area

The walk-through duty free store has been remodelled and enlarged to 940sq m. It now has twice the usable sales area, according to ANA.

The Design Solution, led on this project by Nick Taylor, was responsible for the retail design of the duty free stores with a concept heavily focused on local design references.

The store takes inspiration from Porto and the Douro Valley, offering Sense of Place. The store’s ceilings are said to reproduce the forms of vine terraces or evoke casks and Port wine boxes. The walls and furniture reference the colour of Port wine, while other design elements make use of cork and the art of azulejo (ceramic tiles).

The store brings together regional and international products and flavours and is divided into a number of sections: Perfumes & Cosmetics, Tobacco Products, Drinks, Chocolates/Pastries, Taste of Portugal and Promotional Areas.

A centralised sales area has also been created in departures, which also blends regional and international brands.

One highlight is the ANA-developed and Áreas-operated Portfolio concept. The 300sq m store offers Portuguese brands that express the country’s culture, fashion, flavours, crafts or design.

The commercial expansion includes the opening of Victoria’s Secret, the brand’s second store in Portugal.

The food court in departures has also been expanded to cater for the rising number of passengers at the airport. Douro, which offers traditional Portuguese dishes, is among the new concepts. Other new outlets are Italian House, which serves pizzas, pasta dishes and fresh salads, and Sushi Passion, which combines oriental cuisine with a range of gins.

The First Class Café offers quick and light meals, while Deli&Cia is a grab & go food concept serving a range of pre-packaged fresh food with vegetarian and organic options.
